I am currently working on an information pamphlet on the genecide in Darfur. My plan is to make tons of these things and distribute them around my college and at my town hall.
The Darfur region in the Sudan is undergoing great tradgity. There is a conflict between the Arabic Muslims who hold the politcal power in the region, and the African (mostly Muslims also) people who live within the region. The Arabic Muslims are trying to rid the region of the Africans basically just because of their decent. Much like what happened in Rwanda in 1992 between the Hutus and the Tootsies, this is another display of horrific tribalism and genecide.
The people of the Darfur region need our help. The United States has the power and the ability to go in there and stop this sensless killing, but we are doing nothing, again.
Why should we step in?
Darfur may not have a thriving oil industry, but it has thousands upon thousands of innocent humans who are in danger. 300,000 people have been killed already for no reason other than the color of their skin. How many will it take before we find this situation unacceptable to us?
I am hoping that these pamphlets I am making will promote awarness and other people to take an active role in insisted that we as Americans stand up for our brother and sisters, our fellow humans, across the sea in the Sudan.
The comparison that you made between Somalia and Sudan is quite interesting. In case of Somalia, the US army took an active role in an attempt to stop the genocide back in the early 1990's. Flash forward fifteen years, give or take, the situation in Sudan hasn't received enough attention, when considering the scale of the genocide that is occuring before the world's eyes. The UN hasn't done enough. Even the US, known to some as the world police, has taken a spectator's role on this issue. Money will not help in this case. I agree, the first step to ending this genocide through international affairs is by promoting awareness. As global citizens of the 21st century, each of us is obligated to understand and promote awarness of international issues.
