When I was in 8th grade, about 3 years ago a gay boy transferred to our school. No one knew he was gay because he didnt come out for quite a while. He and I were pretty close. We had alot of the same interests and he actually dated my friend. He came out to us first, we were'nt shocked, he was so feminine we kind of expected it. The principal found out he had come out publically and all of a sudden decided to give him a hard time... but insisted it wasn't because of his sexuality. My friend started to wear make-up and carry a purse, he was making a statement. He was who he was no matter what anyone said about it. The principal went crazy, he threatened to suspend him and said it was inappropriate. My friend got a weeks detention. In protetst alot of my friends and I decided to wear rainbow, and gay rights pins to school. We even had multi-colored hair. Ofcourse we got sent to the principals office. He threatened suspension, and we threatened to bring newspapers in. In the end he gave up and left my friend alone. Thats what got me started in activism, and not just gay rights.

I'm glad you were able to stand up for you friend. As a Lesbian I love looking around and seeing people who stand up for what they believe.

i am very impressed by your friend's ability (and the rest of yours') to stand up for himself on anything in 8th grade. thats a tough time, and for such an awesome bold statement, and to threaten to bring the press to the subject, is a great example of young people taking charge. way to go!
