Where the idea came from... I was reading a fashion magazine at the local library and one article blew my mind. It actually wasn't the article, just a paragraph somewhere in the middle. Anyway an actress was talking about how whenever she buys new shoes she sends an old pair to Africa through the company Shoe4Africa. I think it costs about seven dollars to ship... I went home and "googled" different ways to send shoes around the world. I really wanted to do it but I didn't want to spend my "starbucks" money on shipping costs. I was about to give up on the whole idea when I saw "Reasons why we do what we do." The article went into detail about health, comfort, and self esteem. I couldn't ignore that one less trip to a cafe would help someone in ways I couldn't and didn't have to understand. I sent five pairs of shoes the next evening, but it didn't feel like enough so... I called my moms' friend and asked her if I could put on a shoe drive at her church. We decided together that we would collect shoes for one month and send them in bulk to Shoe4Africa. Eventually we had to switch organizations because shipping costs from CA to NY would be way too much for any of us. Soles4Souls is stationed in Las Vegas, so at the end of the month my dad drove me and the 450 shoes I collected to Vegas. Hopefully I can repeat this process again soon!
